Mr. James L. House, 73, of Burlington, died at 5:36 a.m. Monday, September 13, 2021 at Oakview Nursing and Rehab.
Born June 6, 1948 in Burlington, IA, he was the son of William and Mildred (Brandenburg) House.
James graduated from Burlington High School in 1967 and attended Southeastern Community College. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of OS3.
He worked as a correctional officer at the Iowa State Penitentiary for 5 years, and Mount Pleasant Medium Security Unit for 25 years.
He was baptized and confirmed in St. Luke United Church of Christ.
He was a life member of the VFW Post 7641, New London, IA and a life member of the AMVETS Post 29. He belonged to Tin Can Sailors, Inc., Eagles Aire #150, and was a plank owner of the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington D.C. He was a founder of the U.S.S. George K. Mackenzie DD836.
James was a Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan. He also enjoyed racing.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy House of Burlington, IA; a granddaughter, Lindsey Koehler, East Moline, IL; sister, Pat Archer of Wataga, IL; Aunt, Louise House of Keosauqua; sister-in-law, Bonnie House of Houston, TX; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Teresa Koehler, sister Sandra Nelson of Burlington, and a brother, William House.
The graveside service and interment for Mr. House will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 17th at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Rev. David Yonker will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 7641 of New London and the Henry County Honor Guard. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 16th at Lunning Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Hope Haven and the Des Moines County Animal Shelter.
