Joseph "Joe" Frank Gehringer, 78, of Burlington, died Sunday, November 25, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.
Born March 11, 1940, in Warren County, IA, he was the son of Ignatius Joseph and Nelle Frances Gehringer.
Joseph was a writer for the Catholic Messenger and newspapers in Springfield and Decatur, IL. He later worked in construction, was a union laborer, self-employed in lawn care service, and worked at Farm King.
He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Knights of Columbus, Iowa Master Gardeners, Iowa Professional Lawn Care Association, AARP, U.C.T. (United Commercial Travelers), T.P.A. (Traveler Protective Association), and the International Guild of Knot Tiers. Joe also helped with the maintenance and lawn care of the North Sixth Street cemetery in Burlington.
Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy (Gary) Welcher of Mount Pleasant, and Louise Christian of Williamston, MI; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, David Gehringer, one sister, Geneva Morrison, and two brother-in-laws, Richard Morrison and John Christian.
Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:30 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM Thursday, November 29, 2018, at Prugh's Chapel downtown.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Joe will be 10:00 AM Friday, November 30, 2018, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the fellowship hall at St. Paul's Catholic Church following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry and Notre Dame High School.
