Obituary
John Rolf Flodin, 94, passed away December 23, 2017. Born in Burlington, IA on May 30, 1923, John was the son of Harry and Ruth (Rolf) Flodin. While a student at the University of Iowa, he met his future wife, Ann Steckenrider. They married December 6, 1947 and celebrated their 60th anniversary before she passed away on February 17, 2008.
John served as a medical technician in WW2 aboard the troop transport ship SS Marine Fox as part of an Army Medical Detachment, making eight voyages throughout the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
John and his father operated a frozen foods and wholesale beer distributorship, the Harry S. Flodin Company, in Burlington while Ann and he raised three children. In 1977 they moved to Scottsdale, AZ, where he began a new career in the Savings and Loan industry. While he continued to serve as a Director for the Midwest Federal Savings and Loan Association, he worked first for Saguaro Savings and Loan and later for Southwest Savings. After retiring in 1989, he went on to work for Mayo Clinic as a radiology technician until 1999.
After Ann passed, John made his home with daughter Diana in Scottsdale, moving to Rockport, TX permanently in 2011 to be near daughter Lucia.
John was active in the Burlington Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Boy Scouts of America, Steamboat Days, the Burlington School Board, the Burlington Golf Club, and he belonged to the Presbyterian Church in both Burlington and Scottsdale. A voracious reader all his life, John was equally passionate about his family, travel, boating, photography, bird-watching, the Chicago Cubs, Dixieland Jazz, tennis, golf, SCUBA, singing, astronomy, Civil War history, hiking, and archeology. One proud moment was when he passed on his own Eagle Scout Badge to his grandson Karl Fisher at Karl’s Eagle Scout Ceremony. More than most, John exemplified the highest ideals of Scouting in his own life.
John was preceded in death by his wife Ann, his parents, and one sister, Margo Luckett.
He is survived by one sister Carolyn Thorburn (Jim), son David Flodin (Carolyn), daughters Diana Rogers and Lucia Fisher (Richard), by four grandchildren – Karl Fisher, Kelly, Jeff, and Jamie Loserth, by one great-grandchild, Macee Loserth, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be a private memorial service at a later date.
The family wish to thank the entire staff of Gulf Pointe Village in Rockport for their exemplary care of our father.
We gratefully request any donations be made in his memory to Boy Scouts of America, 1325 W. Walnut Hill Lane, Irving, TX 75015.
Citizens Funeral Home of Arlington, TX assisted the family.
