Marie Elizabeth "Betty" Burrell, 101, of Burlington died Sunday, January 26, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born April 7, 1918 in Monmouth, Illinois she was the daughter of Sam and Marie (Nelson) Schaumleffel. She married Melvin L. Burrell on May 29, 1939 in Kahoka, Missouri. He died December 20, 1967. Betty and her husband, Mel owned and operated Mel's Jewelry Store for many years in downtown Burlington. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. Betty was an animal lover and drew a lot of strength and comfort from having pets. She was an avid flower gardener, enjoyed having company in her home, and was always prepared for a tea party. She loved kids and being around them, especially her grandchildren and was an inspiration to her family and friends teaching everyone so much about life, love and faith. She left a legacy based on Psalm 118:24, "This is the day the Lord has made, let us be glad and rejoice in it. Betty is survived by her three children; Sam (Alice) Burrell of Burlington, Leila (John) Link of La Harpe, Illinois and Cheryl (Stewart) Breuer of Burlington; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one great granddaughter Tabatha Breuer and one brother Lawrence Schaumleffel. The funeral service for Betty Burrell will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 29th at Peace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Kathleen Wohlers will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. Memorials are suggested to the Des Moines County Humane Society, Great River Hospice, Peace Lutheran Church and Union Church of La Harpe, Illinois in memory of Betty.
