Obituary
Marilyn Selma Huth, 97, of Burlington, died Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at her residence in Bickford Cottage.
Born September 30, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of George W. and Flora Margaret Hofmann Stoermer. She married Harold “Hal” Huth on November 7, 1942 in San Antonio, Texas. Hal died August 25, 2003.
Marilyn worked in the marketing department for General Electric for 23 years until her retirement in January 1992. Prior to G.E. she worked at Advance Ross Electronics Corp. as a receptionist and secretary. After graduating from high school, she worked as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell for several years and was co-owner and operator of Huth’s Confectionary. Marilyn enjoyed telling her family stories about growing up in the 1920’s and 1930’s, and they were particularly in awe of the fact that she was working as a telephone operator during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. She recounted how the switchboard lit up and she knew their lives would never be the same.
Always stylish, and often wearing a flattering red, Marilyn was a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She and Hal loved to dance at Cotillion Club and play cards with their card club. Marilyn loved fishing, riding her bike, shopping, playing her organ, and baking cookies with her grandchildren. Her homemade brownies and applesauce were famous amongst her family and friends.
A wonderful conversationalist and fan of crossword puzzles, Marilyn remained sharp and witty until her death. Even in her final days, she had engaging visits with family and staff at Bickford.
She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Marilyn is survived by her two children; Cheryl (Mark) Lieurance of Sperry, Iowa and Tim (Patty) Huth of Bettendorf, Iowa; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Larry Stoermer and Richard Stoermer and one sister Odett Reger.
Marilyn will be celebrated at a graveside service on Monday, May 10, 2021 at 3:00 PM at Aspen Grove Cemetery near the Sunnyside entrance. Family and friends are welcome. The service will be live streamed and can be viewed on Lunning Chapel’s Facebook page.
In lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be made to Hospice or Bethany Lutheran Church.
