Obituary
Charles Dennis Higgins, 69, of Burlington, died at 11:07 PM Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born January 16, 1949, in Burlington, he was the son of John Charles and Ruth Evelyn Ford Higgins. On November 18, 1972, he married his wife Vickie Huechteman in Burlington.
He worked with the Iowa Department of Corrections since 1972 and served as the Deputy Superintendent of the Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility since 1988. He retired as the Deputy Superintendent in 2010.
He was of Catholic faith and was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. He was a member and past-president of the U.S. Deputy Wardens Association, a member and past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge 84, active member of Shoquonquon Boat Club.
Charlie enjoyed boating on the river and at Lake of the Ozarks, traveling, snow skiing, visiting his condo at the Lake of the Ozarks. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family.
Survivors include his wife; one brother-in-law, Kevin (Marcia) Huechteman of Bettendorf; one sister-in-law, Lana (Robert) Ferrel of Hannibal, MO; two nieces, Cim (Matt) Smith of St. Charles, MO and Alissa (Jake) Gordon of Bettendorf; one nephew, Ryan Huechteman of Boulder, CO; several great-nieces and nephews, one great-great-nephew; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM, Sunday, July 29, 2018 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Higgins will be 11:00 AM Monday, July 30, 2018, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir led by Amanda Mansheim.
A celebration of life will be held at Shoquoquon Boat Club following the service.
Memorials have been established to the Great River Hospice House and the Burlington Alzheimer's Association.
