James Edward Alfred, 73, of West Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Hospice House on Thursday evening, September 27, 2012.
Born on August 4, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Willie David and Beulah Wilson Alfred. He married Kay Lea Anne Johnson on June 18, 1960 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Burlington, Iowa.
James worked at Eagle Food Center through Local 431 Meat Cutters Union as a meat cutter and meat dept. manager. He retired after 42 years with Eagle Food Center. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed the Chicago Cubs, Bears and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was coach and past President of the American Little League and also a former member of the Notre Dame Booster Club. He volunteered at the Burlington Regional RecPlex, his church and youth basketball. He loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. Later in life two special loves emerged, Skippy and Pierre, his beloved dogs. James also enjoyed puzzles, fishing and gardening. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Lea Alfred; three sons, Kevin (Jean) Alfred of Johnston, Iowa, Kollin (Susan) Alfred of Burlington, Iowa and Kory (Martha Kincer) Alfred of Madison, Alabama; one daughter, Kristi (Tracy Griffin) Alfred Wallerich of Burlington, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Kristopher Schwebler, Ryan Alfred, Jared Alfred, Kaleb Alfred, Karissa Alfred, Brittany Wallerich, Kimberley Wallerich and Joshua Wallerich; two sisters, Betty Thomas of Davenport, Iowa and Marcia (Marvin) Fraise of West Burlington, Iowa; one brother, Robert (Lillian) Alfred of Sun City, Arizona; one son-in-law, Klauspeter Schwebler of Nashville, Tennessee; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kimberley Anne Alfred Schwebler; his parents; one brother, Herman Alfred; three sisters, Geneva Davis, Clara Boyle and Margaret May Alfred.
Memorial services for James Edward Alfred will be held on Monday, October 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, Burlington, Iowa. Celebrant will be Fr. Bruce DeRammelaere. Special music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment of ashes will be at a later date. Prugh's Chapel will open at 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning with the family receiving friends in Prugh’s Chapel this afternoon from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. A memorial has been established for Great River Home Health Care.
