Obituary
Verlo Marie Turnbull, 95, of Burlington died Monday, August 23, 2021.
Born April 5, 1926 in Marshalltown, Iowa, she was the daughter of Claude and Mary Petitt. She married George R. Turnbull on January 19, 1947 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He died April 6, 2012.
Verlo was a waitress, working banquets at the Holiday Inn and Pzazz for many years. She loved her work and made many life-long friends throughout her career.
In her younger years she made ceramics and crafts, and later bird watching became a favorite pastime. She loved baking, making pies and fudge. She was an avid reader, loved using her library card and many times found herself engrossed in a good book. She was a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. Even at the age of 90 she could recite the STL Cardinals roster. She was very social, always ready to share a cup of coffee and rolls with her friends. Her visits from the grandkids always made her day. Her door was always open.
Survivors include five children, Gary (Karen) Turnbull of Ft. Madison, Ray (Jenny) Turnbull
of Cleveland, TN, Bob Turnbull of Omaha, NE, Myrna (Jan) Galbraith and Terri (Steve)
Crowley, both of Burlington; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, and two brothers.
Verlos’s legacy leaves behind four generations. But we would be remiss to not include the other family members that some might only refer to as neighbors or the people next door. She was blessed to live in her home until the age of 94. This was because she was surrounded by lifelong neighbors who engaged her, took wellness checks, exchanged meals, and had conversations over the fence. They laughed and cried as they watched their children grow up, move on and beloved family members pass. These great people “had her back”. In the last few years, prior to her move to assisted living, they filled her bird feeders, made sure her newspaper was inside the house in the morning, shoveled her walks, dropped in to tease her (she loved it) and had regular communication with Verlo’s children on how she was doing that day. Her baking endeavors were starting to slip but they still produced a good laugh! She shared a mini blind code with them that indicated she was up and the coffee pot was on, or if she might still be in bed. They had a key to the house. These are blessings and gifts that she appreciated and took comfort in, but her kids found these to be priceless and will be forever grateful.
The funeral service for Mrs. Turnbull will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 26th at Lunnings. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Rev. Dean Graber will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the maintenance of the Mississippi Valley Veterans Memorial.
