Obituary
William “Bill” Swisher, 82, of Burlington, died at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House.
Bill was born April 5, 1938, the youngest of three children to John Thomas and Viola May Dirth Swisher. He graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1956. Bill worked as a brick mason with his father and brother to put himself through Iowa Wesleyan College, graduating with a degree in business administration in 1962.
Bill also served in the United States Army National Guard, joining in 1962, reaching the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, honorably discharged in 1969.
Bill married Martha Ruebush on April 30, 1966 and they had three sons. Bill worked 27 years at Burlington Medical Center. He retired in 1998 as Vice President of Finance, after having taken part in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Great River facility in West Burlington. Bill enjoyed traveling with his wife and family including many trips to Lake of the Ozarks, several trips out west, and the occasional month spent in Florida to escape the Iowa winter.
Bill was a member of the Carthage Lake Club for many years and enjoyed the fishing, food, and friendship that the club provided.
He was a believer of the Catholic faith and a member of Divine Mercy Parish (St. Paul’s).
Bill was preceded into the afterlife by his parents, his sister Joyce Daly, and his brother Jack. He is survived by his wife Martha, sons Billy (Kristen) of Gilbert, AZ; Pete (Karin) of West Branch, IA; Andy (Minda) of Slater, IA, and nine grandchildren.
The rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m. Monday, December 28th at St. John Catholic Church. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 7:00 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Bill will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 29th at St. John Catholic Church. The Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz will be Celebrant. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for Divine Mercy Parish, Notre Dame Catholic Schools, and Great River Hospice House.
