Robert (Bob) Eugene Sogard, 96, of Burlington, died on February 10th, 2021, at Great River Hospice in West Burlington.
Bob Sogard, born October 24, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, was the son of Harold and Melva Porter Sogard. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Following discharge from the Navy, Bob attended the University of Iowa, earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism. On July 12th, 1953, Bob married Janet Eileen Rolf of Burlington and was married for 50 years. He worked for the Burlington Hawk Eye from February 1953 to November 1986 as a reporter and associate editor. Bob was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, was a choir member and a Sunday school teacher. Bob was an avid reader, an urban arborist and enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, and Civic Music. You could not find a more passionate fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Bob’s love for life and his devotion to his family, friends and community kept him eternally young.
Bob will be deeply missed by his children, Karen Sogard of Burlington, Mary Sogard of Yucaipa, California and Anne Sogard of Medford, Oregon and his siblings, Marilyn Knutson of Litchfield, Illinois, Marjorie (William) Sumburg of Denver, Colorado, Raymon (Cindy) Sogard of Ellsworth, Iowa, Gary Sogard of Bellevu, Nebraska and Ann (Sonny) Aller of Johnston, Iowa.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Janet, and siblings, Jack Sogard, Kathryn Miner, Dean Sogard, Donald Sogard, Gail Sogard, and Allyn Sogard.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date with burial in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. In Bob’s memory, a memorial has been established at Bethany Lutheran Church, 2515 Madison Avenue, Burlington 52601. Online condolences may be sent to sandhfuneralservice.com.
