Janet D. Snowden, 83, of Burlington, died Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.
Born July 15, 1938, in Charles City, Iowa she was the daughter of Rex and A. Josephine (Taylor) Havenhill. She married Jack Snowden on June 29, 1968. He died July 10, 2003.
Janet spent her first three years in Charles City. When her father suffered a broken back and was in a body cast, they moved to rural Wapello where the family could help take care of him. It was at this time, she started her nursing career, by taking care of him. As she grew up, Janet was active in girls and boys 4H and played basketball. She was salutatorian of her senior class and graduated from Wapello High School in 1956. From there she went to nurses training in Burlington.
She had the experience of taking her psych training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and made the trip there by train. She graduated from Burlington Hospital School of Nursing in 1959. She continued her nursing career in Burlington, first in the E.R., then as Head Nurse in Central Supply, and later in administration until her retirement. She was a member of the Jane A. Delano Nurses Association.
Janet enjoyed being outside gardening and reading. She collected snowman figures and China teacups and enjoyed spending time with friends and listening to country music, especially Patsy Cline.
Family was always a central part of her life as she was growing up with many family get togethers for birthdays, holidays, and special events. In later life, Janet most enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren and going to watch their sporting events.
Survivors include her three children; James Snowden of Burlington, Deanna (Bill) Burke of Denmark, Iowa and Kelly Wilson of Texas; grandchildren Lexy (Eric) Mitchell of Ft Madison, Iowa, Lacy (Travis) Gustafson of Denmark, Iowa, Lany Burke of Denmark, Iowa, Tucker Wilson of Texas and Devon Wilson; great grandchildren Aiden Mitchell, Aubryanna Gustafson and Mason Gustafson; she was the best big sister to Mary (Stephen) Anderson of New London; cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one daughter Cheryl Snowden.
The funeral service for Mrs. Snowden will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 8th at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Dean Graber will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
Memorials have been established for the Jane A. Delano Nurses Association and Des Moines County Humane Society.
