Sherman Allen Smith, 88, of Burlington, died at 10:35 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the Blair House, Burlington, Iowa.
Born on January 17, 1920 in Riverton, IA, he was the son of W. Floyd and Lillie Margaret Allen Smith. On April 9, 1943, he married Mary Elizabeth Uhler in Burlington.
Sherman was a professional engineer, registered land surveyor, and owner of Sherman Smith Associates (now Smith Engineering). He also served as an engineer for several area levee districts.
Sherman attended St. Luke's United Church of Christ and was a graduate of Iowa State University, School of Engineering. He served in the Army as a combat engineer during World War II. He was past president of the Iowa Engineering Society, a member of N.S.P.E., member of the Board of Ethical Review and assisted in writing the code of ethics for the National Engineering Society. He was active in the Des Moines County Conservation Commission and served on the Burlington plumbing board.
Survivors include: his wife, Mary of Burlington; two sons, Sherman Smith Jr. of Irvine, CA and Greg Smith of Brookfield, WI; one daughter, Sharon Knotts of Merrimack, NH; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Sherman was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call at the family home at 1509 A Orchard Meadow Drive, on Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Burlington, IA. on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Vickie Engelman will officiate. A private ash committal service will be held at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for St. Luke's United Church of Christ.
