Richard Neale Sherer, 68, of Burlington, died at 5:58 p.m. Sunday, May 16, 1999, at Burlington Medical Center.
Born June 24, 1930, in Burlington, he was the son of Leslie Eugene and Rosella Rosetta Schweitzer Sherer. On July 26, 1958, he married Janet June Youngman in Burlington.
Mr. Sherer was a 1948 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington Junior College before joining the Marine Corps in 1949. In 1952, he was recalled to the Korean conflict and served until his discharge from the Marine Corps Reserves in Waterloo in 1954.
Mr. Sherer began teaching in January 1957, at Winfield Community Schools, Winfield, and in 1958, at Burlington Community School District, teaching science at Horace Mann and James Madison junior high schools. He then transferred to Burlington High School as the audio visual coordinator and taught photography and television techniques until 1992, when he retired after 35 years of teaching.
He also was a wedding photographer and co-owner of Sherer-Francis Foto and, later, owned Sherer Photography, retiring in 1995. In addition, he was part-owner/operator of The Greenhouse Effect, a hydroponic tomato-growing operation in Bluffdale, Ill., where he continued to supervise the operation until his death.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Kurtis Kyle Sherer of Burlington; two daughters, Kimberly Kay Royer of Danville and Kelly Kolleen Brice of West Burlington; 10 grandchildren; and one sister, Lucille Elaine Sherer of Harper Woods, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant sister.
Visitation will be after 8 a.m. today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Sherer will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. David Rogula officiating and military rites will be conducted by VFW Posts No. 10102 and 9162, both of Burlington. The body will be cremated following the service. Burial will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for a scholarship fund at Burlington Community High School, the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, "Lou Gehrig's Disease" Foundation, Research Division, or the Burlington Public Library's Geneaology and Research Department.
