Obituary
Phillip L. Fleming, 83, of Burlington died Monday, April 6, 2020 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.
Born May 22, 1936 in Hancock County, Illinois he was the son of Lester “Bud” H. and Mildred L. Fleming. He was a graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington Junior College.
Phil was honorably discharged from the US Air Force serving from 1955 thru 1958 and worked in Aircraft Control.
He started his working career at Danez (Evans) Candy Shop while still in Junior High School and worked through High School and Junior College. Employment included Geo A. Fuller Construction Co., Leopold, J.I. Case, Manager of Tradewinds and was a Terminal Manager for Hyman Freightways for 23 years.
His activities included golf, boating, hunting, woodworking, snow skiing and related travels. He had visited over 80 different ski areas in the United States, Canada and Europe.
He was originally introduced to skiing while in the Air Force in 1955 as an activity to cope with the extreme snowfalls while stationed in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the interest was renewed when the Skiowans Ski Club started their activities in the early 70’s.
In addition to the many Midwestern and Western U.S. ski resorts, his travels took him to destinations in Canada, Germany, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, France and Italy.
He planned and coordinated the Ski Clubs first trip to Innsbruck, Austria. In addition to many U.S. destinations.
At the age of 59, he received his certification as a professional ski instructor of America and spent 13 years teaching skiing at Chestnut Mountain Resort in Galena, Illinois. He quit teaching at 72 years old due to health reasons.
He is survived by his three sons; Mark Fleming of Rancho Santa Margarita, California, Tim Fleming of Burlington and Richard Broker of Lewisville, Texas; one brother James Fleming of Burlington; one sister Janet Mumm of ElCajon, California; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews in addition to his very special friends John and Doris Champagne of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister in infancy.
A private graveside service and inurnment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemtery. Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will not be having a public memorial at this time.
According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
