Mr. Melvin "Mel" Eugene Lee, 81, of Burlington died at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Bickford Assisted Living.
Born February 29, 1932 in Muscatine, he was the son of Russell and LeOma Tharp Lee. He married Darlene Sherer in Burlington in 1952.
Mr. Lee was a graduate of Burlington High School and Truman University at Kirksville, Missouri. He was a Navy veteran serving from 1951 - 1955 during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Lee was the owner of several real estate firms throughout his career as well as a local businessman and entrepreneur. He also taught as Southeastern community College and was an administrator at I.A.A.P. He was a member of Four Square Gospel Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and dog owner who shared his love of the outdoors with his family throughout his life. He also loved hunting, fishing, his family and storytelling.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Lee of Burlington; two sons, Randy (Carole) Lee and Kelly Lee both of Burlington; one daughter, Julia Rittler of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Chris (Hillary) Lee of Burlington, Jesse Wagner and Patrick Bohnenkamp of Fort Madison, Jenna Rittler of Burlington, Nicholas Rittler of Iowa City, Jamey (Sondra) Bohnenkamp, Randee Melissa Lee and Cody Lee of Burlington; and two great grandchildren, Hunter Bohnenkamp and Charlie Bohnenkamp both of Fort Madison.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas Lee; sister, Joyce Shultz and son-in-law, Richard.
Open visitation with the family present will be from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday, June 9th only.
The funeral service for Mr. Lee will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 10th, at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Sam Fratt officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.
A memorial has been established in Mel's memory.
