Obituary
John Koch passed away Saturday night at his home No. 1916 Osborn street, after a brief illness. He was born in Bavaria, Germany, May 17, 1842, and came here with his parents 62 years ago. He was one of the first volunteers in the war of the rebellion, being a member of an Illinois regiment and he was assigned to duty as one of the guard of honor at Lincoln's funeral. He worked here at his trade, that of a cigar maker, until he found that his health was being affected, and he found employment at the big shops at West Burlington where he gave the company thirty years of faithful service. In former years he was a member of one of the old brass bands and a singer of local renown. He was one of the charter members of Bismark Lodge No. 275, Ancient Order United Workmen and remained with the organization to the end. He wa widely known and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He leaves the widow and the following children: Mrs. Charles Friedal, of this city; Mrs. Bertha Broughton, of Thompson, CConn.; Mrs. Hohn Karns, of Sioux City; Mrs. Pauline King, and John and Herbert Koch, here. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the family home. The services will be conducted under the auspices of the Bismark lodge and many old friends and shopmates will pay the last honors to the good man. Internment will be made in Aspen Grove.
