Obituary
DIED..Near this city, on Saturday morning last, Major Jeremiah Smith, Jr., in the 50th year of his age. The deceased was one of the first settlers in this State, having taken up his residence at this point as early as the year 1834. He has filled many important positions in the early history of this country, and as an honest man and good and useful citizen, he was highly esteemed by all who knew him. With the first settlement and improvement of this city his name is honorably connected, and his many acts of charity and liberality, of a public as well as private nature, will be affectionately and long remembered. Like other men he had his faults, but we verily believe he had no enemies. "Peace be to his ashes"
