Freddie L. Bechtel, Sr. , 79, of Burlington, died at 4:59 a.m. Thursday, February 12, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Born February 5, 1930, in Memphis, MO, he was the son of Charles and Florence Smith Bechtel. On December 11, 1955, he married Helen W. Loeffers in Kirksville, MO. Mr. Bechtel began working in various areas of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and ended in development, working at the plant from 1948 until 1990. He then was employed by the Burlington School District from 1990 until his retirement in 1996. He was a graduate of Memphis (MO) High School, and was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was of the Lutheran faith, and enjoyed watching basketball and baseball and doing yard work. Survivors include his wife; one son, Freddie "Fred" Bechtel, Jr. of Burlington; two stepsons, Thomas and Ron Lee, both of Burlington; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Max Bechtel of Burlington, and Orville Bechtel of Oskaloosa; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and three brothers. The body has been cremated. A private family graveside burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Carl Engstrom officiating. A memorial has been established.
