Obituary

Franklin Charles "Wacky" Jay, 78, of Burlington, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at Great River Medical Center.
Born Oct. 12, 1926, in Des Moines, he was the son of Floyd Wyatt and Elsa Elizabeth Josephine Friml Jay. On Feb. 7, 1948, he married Katherine M. Kotzy Hoschek in Burlington. She died April 2, 1995.
Mr. Jay was a union brickmason by trade and worked 17 years on the railroad at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.
He was a 1944 graduate of Burlington High School. He was of the Catholic faith. He was an Army veteran and served with the Airborne Infantry, 82nd Airborne, for two tours. He was a member of Eagles, Moose, American Legion, Brick Layers Local No. 10 for 50 years, Barber Shop Quartet, Drum and Bugle Corps and Disabled American Veterans. He also was a bowler. He liked to tinker with wood. He sang, played the violin, banjo and piano. He liked to garden, horse shoe and taught his kids to sing barbershop harmony. He played in a band called the 5 Aces and played the banjo for Steamboat Days. He loved the St. Louis Cardinals and enjoyed trains.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathleen Marie Jay of Wever, Debra Sue Mason of Missouri and Julie Ann Luttenegger of Burlington; one son, John Edward Jay of Burlington; six grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
