Obituary

Carl J. Wachutka, 43, widely known Burlington salesman, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home, 1518 Smith street, Sunday afternoon. Firemen worked more than an hour trying to revive Wachutka. The new portable iron lung given the department by the Veterans of Foreign Wars post was used for the first time on a case. A native of Burlington, Wachutka was born Aug. 12, 1901, and married Marian Gibb in Galesburg Dec. 27, 1923. he was a member of First Methodist church and of the Homebuilders class there, of Des Moines Masonic lodge and of United Commercial Travelers in which he was active. For several years he was president of the Burlington Sportsman's club. A salesman here since the war, he formerly was in the sausage manufacturing business which was suspended because of war conditions. Surviving are his widow; 2 children, James and Carolyn; a brother, Roy, formerly associated with him in the sausage business and now with the army in Italy; and 2 sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Underwood of Burlington and Mrs. Clara Keever of San Diego, Calif. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Methodist church. Rev. Deane Chapman will officiate. There will be Masonic services at the grave in Aspen Grove cemetery.
