OBITUARY:
Barry Erskine Lowthorp, son of Erskine Goff and Marjorie May (Cunningham) Lowthorp, was born on June 27, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois. He entered into eternal life on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age 83 years, 11 months, 12 days.
His early life was spent growing up in Burlington, Iowa. He attended the Burlington Community Schools, graduating from Burlington High School with the Class of 1957.
It was in Burlington that Barry met the love of his life, Carolyn Erma Carpenter. They were united in marriage on June 7, 1959, in Burlington at the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Following their marriage they lived in Phoenix, Arizona, for 17 years. They then moved to Denver, Colorado, for two years before settling in Shenandoah in 1977, raising their two boys, Scott Wayne and Greg Allen.
On a whim, Barry traveled to Shenandoah, Iowa, to check out a business opportunity and before leaving town became the new owner of World Publishing Company, a business he owned and operated for nearly 30 years, from 1978 to 2007, when he retired and sold the building.
One of his greatest passions was flying. He was an avid private pilot who enjoyed traveling back and forth on business and to their second home in Branson, Missouri. He also enjoyed fishing and boating. Together, Carolyn and Barry enjoyed family vacations together. Often spent at the lake whether it be Minnesota, Sun Valley, or Table Rock. Barry was also proud of his service in the Army National Guard. He proudly served over 24 years beginning in Burlington, Arizona, Colorado, and lastly at Omaha, Nebraska.
Preceding Barry in death were his parents; and three brothers, Richard, Randall and Blaine Lowthorp. Survivors include his wife of over 64 years, Carolyn Lowthorp of Shenandoah, IA; their two sons, Scott Wayne Lowthorp and his wife Heidi of Sidney, IA, and Greg Allen Lowthorp of Okmulgee, OK; four grandchildren, Jesse Allen Vondra of Omaha, NE, Danielle Paige (Ryan) Morris of Ft. Campbell, KY, Andrew Scott (Leslie) Lowthorp of Burnsville, MN, and Jessica (Joe) Devlin of Omaha, NE; great grandson, Atticus Sage Morris of Ft. Campbell, KY; sister Patricia (Donald) Schwenker of Sun City West, AZ; other relatives; and many friends.
